Welcome to the ILC Symposium 2024 @ Leuven!

Welcome to the 2024 edition of the ILC Symposium fully dedicated to Lobular Breast Cancer, which will take place in Leuven on September 23-25 at the Irish College Leuven! Set against the backdrop of hope, education, and progress, this event promises to be a beacon of inspiration and empowerment for all.

Amidst the challenges we face, there is strength in unity, and there is power in knowledge. Together, we will delve into the latest advancements in lobular breast cancer diagnosis, translational research, treatment modalities, survivorship strategies, and the vital role of advocacy in shaping a brighter future for those affected by this disease.

Whether you are a seasoned healthcare professional, a passionate advocate, a survivor, or a dedicated scientist, this conference offers a welcoming space for collaboration, learning, and fostering meaningful connections.

We eagerly await your presence in September 2024.

Warmest regards,

The scientific committee

Social Activities

Book the activities of your choice via the registration form (link on top). They are all free except the dinner at Troubadour on the 24th for which a participation fee is requested. Of note, registration is not required for the lab tour.

23rd of September

A quick tour of the laboratory for translational breast cancer research (LTBCR, headed by Prof. Desmedt) will be organized for the patient advocates. In addition, main core facilities of the UZ/KU Leuven Campus will be presented.

As part of our conference experience, we’re excited to offer all participants a complimentary walking tour of this charming Belgian city. Immerse yourself in the rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture of Leuven while getting to know your fellow attendees in a relaxed and active setting. You can choose between two options:

  • 3km Walking Tour: Explore the highlights of Leuven in a leisurely 1.5-hour stroll.
  • 5km Walking Tour (including Heverlee): Extend your adventure to include Heverlee and Arenberg.

Please note that dinner afterwards is not included. However, Leuven offers an array of delightful restaurants and cafes where you can continue your adventure and socialize with newfound friends from the tour.

24th of September

To get a nice memory, we plan to get a group picture at the Irish College. Depending of our famous Belgian weather, the picture could be taken from inside our outside.

Tiensestraat 32, 3000 Leuven.

We will close the first day of our symposium by a warm gathering at the Troubadour restaurant (https://www.troubadour.be/) located in the historical centre of Leuven.

25th of September

In order to start the last day of the symposium fully energized, we propose having a short morning run starting from the Irish College Leuven. Another way of discovering Leuven.

GRASP Poster Meetup

GRASP (Guiding Researchers and Advocates to Scientific Partnerships) is a patient-led organization that connects and empowers patients, clinicians, and researchers to exchange ideas and learn from each other. The in-person Poster Meetup will take place during the poster session and will bring scientists and patient advocates together for small group discussions about posters being presented at medical and scientific conferences.

The GRASP philosophy is that all participants have unique experiences and can add to the discussion. Unlike traditional presentations, GRASP adopts a conversational approach whereby patient advocates are encouraged to share their personal experiences, whether as cancer survivors or caregivers, shedding light on the profound impact of cancer on their lives.

GRASP seeks to create a bi-directional interactive learning environment whereby:

  1. Scientists can engage directly with the people they dedicate their lives to helping, bringing a sense of urgency and purpose to their work;
  2. Researchers can fine tune their communication skills by discussing their work with a nonscientific audience who is invested and eager to learn;
  3. Patient advocates can understand scientific processes in a robust and meaningful manner, giving them hope for longer and better lives that only research can provide.

For Breast Cancer Advocates

The meeting will be open for community members, and we will make an effort to distribute information on ILC in lay language. A representative patient advocate group is working on an agenda focused on patients, their families and advocates. We will post updates here.

Selected scientific sessions (based on speakers’ consent) will be recorded and posted on the ILC symposium website after the end of the Symposium (similar to what was done for prior ILC Symposia). It will be available for free, and no registration is required to watch the recorded sessions.
